You Are Good Enough Now: Thoughts From An Anxiety Therapist in Salt Lake City

One of the most common themes that shows up in therapy among the women I work with in Salt Lake City is not feeling good enough. Most of the time, women don’t realize how much of what they struggle with—anxiety, perfectionism, overthinking—is rooted in this belief. They’ve had experiences that quietly reinforced the idea that they aren’t enough, and they carry those experiences with them without fully seeing how deeply it’s shaped their lives.

As I sit across from women in my anxiety therapy in Salt Lake City practice, it’s often hard for me to understand what they see when they look at themselves. I get to know their struggles intimately—their mistakes, the painful things they’ve lived through, and I see capable, resilient women. They don’t see that, though. Instead, they’re convinced everyone else is doing better, handling life more easily, and somehow getting it right.

The need to be perfect can be absolutely overwhelming and paralyzing. Many perfectionists that I work with don’t even realize they are perfectionistic because they are of the mindset if they can’t be completely perfect they aren’t even going to try. This is still perfectionism, and it can be taxing on your mental health. I know when you are trying to perfect all the time, you are really trying to manage your anxiety. When you deal with perfectionism, you may not realize that it doesn’t actually help your anxiety long term. The effects are only short-lived.

You are good enough regardless of what you have or haven’t accomplished. It’s ok to be human, and it’s good enough.
